What is Base64

Base64 is a binary-to-text encoding scheme that is commonly used to encode binary data, such as images, audio files, or other types of files, into a plain text format. The name "Base64" comes from the fact that it uses 64 different characters to represent the binary data.

In Base64 encoding, each group of three bytes from the original binary data is represented as four ASCII characters. These characters are selected from a set of 64 different characters, which typically include uppercase and lowercase letters (A-Z, a-z), numbers (0-9), and two additional characters (usually '+', '/'). The '=' character is used for padding if the input data length is not a multiple of three.

It is useful in situations where binary data needs to be represented as text, especially when the underlying communication or storage mechanism may not support binary data directly.
